A heat pump uses electrical energy to move heat from air, ground or water and raise it to the temperature required by the building. Because environmental heat contributes to the output, the useful thermal energy delivered can be several times greater than the electrical energy consumed.<\/p>\n<p>Efficiency is not, however, a single permanent number. A laboratory value at one operating point, a standardised seasonal rating and measured performance after installation answer different questions.
