Volkgasse 8, in Vienna’s historic Hietzing district, is home to an impressive three-storey residential building dating back to 1910. The building was extensively renovated and extended as part of the refurbishment and modernization in 2022\/2023. In addition to an attic extension and new balconies on the garden side, the thermal building envelope was significantly improved and the old, fossil-fuel heating system was completely replaced with a sustainable solution.<\/p>\n
Energy-efficient solution: iDM heat pump and photovoltaics<\/strong>
\nThe heating and hot water supply for the 1,030 m\u00b2 building is now provided by a central geothermal heat pump, which relies on the intelligent use of natural resources. 14 deep boreholes were drilled in the garden, drawing geothermal energy from depths of up to 130 meters. Our TERRA SW 70 Max H high-temperature heat pump<\/strong> with an output of 70 kW uses this energy to supply the entire house with emission-free heat and hot water.<\/p>\nThe refurbishment has not only reduced the house’s heating requirements by 55%<\/strong>, but also enables a sustainable and energy-efficient future. The radiators in the existing apartments could continue to be used, while the gas floor heating systems were replaced by efficient heat transfer stations. In the newly converted attic apartments and the renovated units, heat is transferred via underfloor heating, which can be used for passive cooling in summer.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
Photovoltaics: energy from the sun<\/strong>
\nIn addition to the innovative heat pump technology, the building also has a photovoltaic system with an output of around 25 kWp. The solar modules are installed both on the roofs and on the south-facing fa\u00e7ade and not only supply electricity for the heat pump operation, but will also be used to charge electric vehicles in the front garden in future.<\/p>\nWith this reference system, iDM W\u00e4rmepumpen impressively demonstrates how sustainable and future-oriented heating and cooling solutions in combination with renewable energies can lead to a significant reduction in energy consumption. Volkgasse 8 is an example of how existing buildings can be heated efficiently, environmentally friendly and independently of fossil fuels using modern technologies.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
